Nearly every ant problem in a Cambridgeshire home is the black garden ant. But it is worth knowing what else it could be, because there is one species you must not spray — and spraying it is exactly what most people do first.
Dark, roughly 3 to 5 millimetres, nesting outdoors in soil, under paving, along paths and against walls. Active from spring to autumn and quiet in winter. It is the ant behind the trail across your worktop and it is what our standard treatment is aimed at.
Much smaller, pale yellow to light brown, and the important difference is that it does not live outdoors in this country. BPCA describes it as a tropical species found in the UK only in heated buildings, needing a minimum of 18°C to breed.
Two questions settle it almost every time. Are they dark or pale? And are they active in the middle of winter? Dark and seasonal is the garden ant. Small, pale and active in January is not, and we would want to look before anything is treated.
If you are not sure, a photograph is genuinely useful, or keep one in a clear bag. It costs nothing to check and it is a great deal better than treating the wrong thing.
Identification comes first, and on ants it genuinely matters. What we use and how long it takes depend on the species, and one of them must not be sprayed at all.
Once we know what we are dealing with, the treatment goes onto the active routes to be carried back to the nest. We put the treatment and the price to you before anything is arranged.
Our current price is £240 fixed price, guaranteed. There is no call-out fee, and the figure is confirmed with you before anything is booked — never afterwards.
Our Ant Control cost guide explains what the price covers and what happens on the day, and every price we charge is published on the pest control price list.
The risk with DIY here is not just that it fails. Reach for a spray against the wrong species and you can turn one colony into several, spread through the building — which is a considerably more expensive problem than the one you started with.
